Circ-Boost

Pilot 4:
Sortland, Vesterålen, Northern Norway

The Norwegian pilot aim is to demonstrate an entire circular building process “from demolition to construction” in the Arctic region of Norway, by deploying leading construction technologies and solutions. Pilot is going to build the GAIA Vesterålen Museum from locally available waste stream with focus on utilisation of recycled concrete aggregates generated from demolition of two structures.

The pilot is taking place in Sortland, Vesterålen in Northern Norway, where entire circular building process will be demonstrated on direct utilisation of recycled and reused waste stream into new construction of the GAIA Vesterålen museum. The pilot will be an international showcase that will present how joint action across industries and sectors for ambitious climate and environmental goals can work in the Arctic region.

increase in knowledge of the environmental footprint of buildings and construction materials

  • Assessment of recyclability of non-contaminated concrete, selective demolition (M3-M18)
  • Selection of suitable production method/crusher type, sorting and storage (M18-M24)
  • Up-cycling utilisation of produced RCA and overall integration of various waste materials (M3-M48)

Norwegian pilot will directly demonstrate an entire circular approach on newly established value chain for material recovery/circularity within one city. This approach will clearly show the benefits and challenges of circular construction in the Arctic region where harsh weather, high demands on material performance and scarce population are involved. Through the demolition of two buildings, non-contaminated concrete will be provided, that will be then used for construction of the Gaia Museum.

  • Establishment of new value chains that will lead towards generation of new business and job opportunities
  • Bringing together locals and tourists to learn about new direction of sustainable construction
